Biography

Sonya was admitted to the State Bar of Texas in November 2011.  She began her legal career in Tarrant County at that same time. Sonya filed and litigated a same-sex divorce on behalf of her client prior to the legalization or recognition of same-sex marriage in Texas. After the trial court dismissed the suit for lack of jurisdiction, she appealed the suit to the Second Court of Appeals in Fort Worth. Ultimately, Sonya litigated the first publicly recognized same-sex divorce in Tarrant County, Texas. Sonya enjoys the challenges of litigation and strategically using the rules of civil procedure and evidence. However, she realizes the importance of finding an amicable resolution for her clients and their families.

While in Fort Worth, Sonya enjoyed being an active member in the Tarrant County Family Law Bar Association. She is Board Certified in Family Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization. Sonya, along with Judge Bill Harris of the 233rd District Court, co-founded a CLE program in Tarrant County with the primary focus being on helping young lawyers learn trial skills. Sonya enjoys being involved in her community and is an active member of the Highland Lakes Bar Association, Daybreak Rotary, PTO, the State Bar of Texas Standing Committee on Child Abuse and 100 Chicks for Charity. In addition, Sonya handles all family law matters for the Highland Lakes Legal Center, a private, non-profit organization. Most importantly, Sonya enjoys being a dedicated mother to her young son.
